The telecommunications industry in Barbados witnessed a significant transformation from copper cabling to a new fibre cabling transmission system. This shift required technicians to be skilled in the areas of network planning and design, fibre cabling installation, network certification, network testing and troubleshooting.
The partnership between Digicel Barbados Limited & the Samuel Jackman Prescod Institute of Technology (SJPI) was therefore formed to train and certify 30 Barbadians in the National Vocational Qualification in Fibre Installers Level 2. This training programme is the first fibre optic technology programme offered by an educational institution in Barbados. As part of the programme, a new state-of-the art Fibre Installers Training Lab was also developed at the SJPI which will ensure continuous training and certification in Fibre Installation.
